The tap water in many homes may contain contaminants including lead. Lead is a neurotoxin. Manifestations include mild delirium, confusion, and high fever progressing to more serious symptoms such as seizures.
According to the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there is no safe level of lead in the blood, and children younger than 6 years old are most vulnerable to lead poisoning. Even low levels of lead are associated with learning and behavioral difficulties, the CDC says, and lead exposure can cause lifelong developmental issues and speech and hearing difficulties, among other health problems. And harm from drinking contaminated water could be irreversible.
Lead service pipes in older homes were initially installed in cities decades ago because they were cheaper and more malleable, but the heavy metal can corrode, causing lead to leach into drinking water.
Congress banned their installation in 1986. In early October, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) finalized the Lead and Copper Rule Improvements, a policy update that requires water utilities to replace all lead pipes within a decade – a move aimed at eliminating a toxic threat that continues to affect children each year.
There are lead service pipes in older homes. The EPA estimates that up to 9 million homes nationwide are served by legacy lead pipes, many of which are in lower-income communities and communities of color.
Required sampling protocols must be adhered to. Sampling tests are to be conducted from a kitchen or bathroom sink.
The EPA’s threshold is 10 parts per billion (ppb) under the new Lead and Copper Rule Improvements.
To find out if the metal pipe that feeds water throughout the house is a lead pipe?
You should use a key or any similar object to gently scratch the metal pipe. If shiny, silver streaks appear, then that confirms the presence of a lead pipe.
The State of New York Department of Health has stated that health care providers test children for lead at age 1 and again at age 2. This action is a step in the right direction.
